Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (aCT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness and values-based approach to counselling that helps individuals develop psychological flexibility, the ability to stay present, adapt to challenges, and take meaningful action even when life feels difficult.
Learn to Move Forward, Even When Life Feels Hard
Painful thoughts, anxiety, self-doubt, grief, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm are all part of being human. But when these experiences begin to control your choices or keep you stuck, it can feel difficult to move toward the life you want.
At Pacific Solstice Group, we offer Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop greater flexibility, resilience, and clarity. ACT is an evidence-based approach that supports you in responding differently to difficult emotions, so they no longer define your decisions or limit your life. Rather than trying to eliminate distress entirely, ACT helps you create space for it while building a life rooted in meaning and purpose.
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness and values-based approach to counselling that helps individuals develop psychological flexibility, the ability to stay present, adapt to challenges, and take meaningful action even when life feels difficult. ACT focuses less on “getting rid” of uncomfortable thoughts or emotions and more on changing your relationship to them. Instead of becoming stuck in anxiety, shame, grief, or self-criticism, you learn how to respond in ways that align with who you want to be and what matters most to you. ACT is commonly used to support anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, chronic stress, grief, life transitions, and relationship challenges.
How ACT Can Help
ACT can be especially helpful if you feel:
- Stuck in cycles of anxiety, worry, or overthinking
- Overwhelmed by difficult emotions or life transitions
- Disconnected from your values or sense of purpose
- Caught in patterns of avoidance or procrastination
- Burnt out, emotionally exhausted, or chronically stressed
- Struggling with grief, loss, or uncertainty
- Held back by self-criticism, perfectionism, or fear of failure
ACT supports you in building emotional flexibility while helping you take small, meaningful steps toward the life you want, even when discomfort is present.
The Core Principles of ACT
At Pacific Solstice Group, ACT-informed counselling may include support in developing:
- Acceptance: Learning how to make space for difficult thoughts, feelings, and experiences rather than fighting against them or becoming consumed by them.
- Mindfulness & Present-Moment Awareness: Building the ability to stay grounded in the present instead of becoming caught in worry about the future or regret about the past.
- Cognitive Defusion: Learning practical strategies to step back from unhelpful thoughts, so they have less power over your emotions and behaviour.
- Values Clarification: Identifying what matters most to you, your relationships, health, parenting, career, identity, or personal growth, and using those values to guide decisions.
- Committed Action: Taking realistic, meaningful steps toward the life you want, even when fear, anxiety, or uncertainty show up along the way.
DBT is often delivered in both individual therapy sessions and group skills training. It’s known for its supportive, non-judgmental approach, emphasizing the balance between acceptance (accepting things as they are) and change (working to improve one’s thoughts, behaviors, and emotions).
What to Expect in ACT Counselling
ACT is collaborative, practical, and deeply personalized. In therapy, we work together to understand what may be keeping you stuck and identify the patterns that no longer serve you. Sessions may include mindfulness exercises, values exploration, practical coping strategies, and meaningful goal-setting.
Rather than trying to “fix” you, ACT helps you reconnect with your strengths and develop the flexibility needed to navigate life with greater confidence and self-compassion.
We thoughtfully tailor therapy to your needs and may integrate ACT alongside other evidence-based approaches such as CBT, EMDR, emotion-focused therapy, strengths-based practice, and attachment-informed care.
Is ACT Right for Me?
ACT may be a good fit if you are ready to stop fighting with your internal experiences and begin building a life that feels more aligned, purposeful, and meaningful. It is especially helpful for individuals navigating anxiety, burnout, grief, identity shifts, parenting stress, major life transitions, trauma recovery, or feelings of being stuck.
You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. We meet you where you are.
